Marker Showdown: Copic vs Koda

Copic markers have long been considered the gold standard when it comes to alcohol-based markers – but will Cheap Joe’s brand Koda markers give them a run for their money? To find out I tested both brands side by side, using similar colors on different surfaces. As I swatched, I tested for color payoff, blendability, and overall performance. I also noted which substrates worked best with these markers.

Comparing Copic and Koda Markers on Different Surfaces

Below are test sheets of the different surfaces I tried. I have listed the color codes for each marker used and specified the manner in which they were blended. I found this to be an accurate depiction of how they responded to the papers in question while also showcasing each brand’s blending capabilities.

Comparing Art Markers on Yupo and Bristol

As far as substrates go, I highly recommend smooth and non-porous surfaces such as Bristol or Yupo. These will allow you to layer and blend in the manner alcohol markers were intended for. In the pictures below you can see how nicely they apply on each.

Overall, I was very impressed with these markers! I found them to behave almost identically to the Copics in terms of color vibrancy and blendability. In fact, I actually believe the Koda markers blend a bit more smoothly. That being said, the only difference I noted was that the nibs on the Koda markers are a bit firmer in texture. But I did not find that to detract from their performance in any way.

Cost Comparison of Koda vs Copic Markers

Both brands offer replaceable nibs and refillable inks. And on that note, a pretty cool feature of the Koda markers is that their brush nib is double-ended. This means that when one side wears out you can simply flip it over and have a fresh new nib. So it essentially already comes with a replacement. How cool is that ?

The other attribute that clearly make these a win for me over Copic is the price point. A single Copic marker goes for almost $6.00 per marker, while a single Koda marker is around $4.00. As a long time user and fan of Copic markers myself, I must admit that the Koda’s are swaying me.

Final Verdict Comparing Copic vs Koda

For all the reasons I’ve mentioned I would highly recommend these markers. They are smooth, vibrant, affordable, and blend like a dream. Beginners and professionals alike should check them out!
