Come join us as we explore and develop an understanding of the materials, tools, and physical characteristics of the medium. My approach suggests an intensified focus on observation, what is occurring with water, pigment, and paper, as a means of mastering watercolor.

This workshop will be held at Cheap Joe's Art Stuff in Boone, NC. Class hours will be Monday-Thursday from 9 am-4:00 pm with a 1-hour lunch break. Thursday's class will be 9 am-1 pm. The workshop tuition does not include additional dining (breakfast, dinner, snacks), lodging, travel expenses, and supplies. To see more of what Boone and the High Country has to offer, check here.

Your workshop tuition includes lunches Monday through Wednesday catered by Wildwood Community Market and Deli, a local gourmet delicatessen specializing in locally sourced organic produce, meats and cheeses, and bread. This lunch option will allow students to focus on their art without the stress of traveling and dining. Additionally, Cheap Joe's Staff has organized a Welcome Dinner for participants who choose to participate at one of our excellent local restaurants.

Wes Waugh is a watercolor landscape painter who has made the North Carolina High Country his home for the past 39 years. He began learning to paint at the age of twelve, and has held over sixteen exhibitions, and serves as a workshop instructor, guest presenter, and juror for art-related businesses and organizations. He has been an ambassador, product consultant, author, and workshop instructor for Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff since 1999. In 2022, he served as the selected juror for the Hawaiian Watercolor Society’s Annual Exhibition. Simultaneously during his art career, Wes held a full-time teaching and administrative position in the Student Learning Center at nearby Appalachian State University until his retirement in May 2020 after thirty-four years.

Wes states: “My teaching approach focuses on providing experiential tools and conceptual frameworks with the goal being to help every participant, over time, …experience the joy of becoming a confident and original artist”.

Wes is also active as a wilderness conservationist and currently serves as the Executive Director of the nonprofit organization “ACleanWilsonCreek.org,” sponsored by the U.S. National Forest Service and dedicated to the protection and preservation of this North Carolina National Wild and Scenic River south of Grandfather Mountain. Wes enjoys fly fishing, hiking, backpacking, gardening, and landscaping, and the ongoing restoration of a 1910 historic home in downtown Boone, NC. He also is devoted to spending time with his wife, Lynne (also an Appalachian State employee), and daughters Andie, twenty-one, an N.C. State junior, and Gigi, sixteen, a sophomore at Watauga High School.
