In this live, interactive online workshop, Sterling will show a wide variety of watercolor techniques that are essential for painting a loose and colorful wooded landscape with watercolor. There will be a strong emphasis on being creative and expressive with design and color. Some of the techniques explained and demonstrated each day include developing a strong composition, saving select areas of white paper for highlights, building rich dark values for contrast and drama, working with large-stiff bristle brushes, controlling edge quality, working on wet paper to achieve soft edges, adding calligraphy for linear detail, creating textures, expressive brushwork, and much more. Each day, Sterling will do a complete watercolor painting of a wooded scene within the first two hours. The paintings will vary each day and will cover subjects such as trees, grass, rocks, and moving water. As he teaches, he explains every aspect of what he is doing and explains his thought process as he works on each painting. Questions are encouraged any time. The remaining 2 hours of each class are reserved for students to work on their own paintings with assistance and critiques, by Sterling, upon request. It is not required that students paint the same piece that Sterling paints. This workshop is recommended for those with a working knowledge and experience with basic watercolor techniques. Some techniques may be difficult for beginners. Sterling has been teaching workshops for Cheap Joe’s for over 20 years, and his workshops continue to sell out, so sign up early!

Level 3: Intermediate (and up) - Assumes the student already has a basic knowledge of the medium. Average paced with individual help for all students.
Sterling Edwards is a contemporary watermedia artist, teacher, author, juror, and digital photographer. He is a native of Kansas City, Missouri and has been a resident of North Carolina since 1973. He is a much sought-after international watermedia workshop instructor and is often selected to judge national and international art competitions. Sterling holds signature membership status in the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, and the National Watercolor Society. In 2015 he was awarded the designation of a "Bonafide Whiskey Painter” and honored with a lifetime signature membership in the internationally renowned Whiskey Painters of America, an international organization with a membership that is limited to only 150 artists worldwide.
Cancellation Policy - By completing your purchase transaction, you agree to accept the following cancellation/refund policy: A $30 cancellation fee applies if you cancel at least 8 days in advance. Cancellation requests need to be emailed directly to edwina@cheapjoes.com. There is NO refund, for any reason, less than 8 days prior, during, or after the class. You cannot transfer to a different workshop. There are no refunds or discounts for missed sessions or no-shows. If the instructor allows the workshop to be recorded, the videos are only available to enrolled students. If you cannot attend the live sessions but want to receive the videos, please notify Edwina in advance of the workshop. No-shows, without prior notification, will not receive video access. If Cheap Joe's or the instructor cancels the class, you will receive a full refund of tuition, but not other related expenses.
