Do you want to paint more from your own photos but struggle with composition? If you're ready to move beyond "winging it," this workshop is for you!
In "From Photo to Final Painting," Steve Berry will guide you through the painting process while encouraging fun and skill development. You'll practice selecting and editing photo compositions to create stronger foundations, simplify shapes with an ink notan to emphasize key elements, and learn to use the Watercolor Clock for better control in wet techniques. Additionally, you'll master the color wheel to achieve desired mixtures without relying on rigid recipes.
Steve will foster a supportive atmosphere, providing reference materials and encouraging you to work on your own photos on the final day. Go beyond technique and discover the mental framework needed to express your vision through watercolors!

Pre-class instructions and/or specific details will be emailed 1 week prior to the workshop.
Level 2 (and up) - Beginner-Intermediate: Reviews basic techniques for beginners as needed, and offers practice exercises at an average pace to assist in gaining confidence and experience with the medium. Assistance is given to all.
Steve Berry paints in a loose, expressive style that balances realism with playful interactions of water, gravity, and pigment. Based in Vallejo, CA, he has a deep appreciation for the region's rolling woodlands, tawny slopes, and bold shorelines. A member of the Benicia Plein Air Gallery and The Gardener Gallery, his work can be seen in person. Steve also teaches studio and plein air workshops, sharing his passion for watercolor with others.
By completing your purchase, you agree to the following cancellation and refund policy:
- A $30 cancellation fee applies if you cancel at least 8 days in advance.
- Cancellation requests must be emailed directly to meghann@cheapjoes.com.
- No refunds will be issued for cancellations made less than 8 days prior to, during, or after the class.
- Transfers to a different workshop are not permitted.
- There are no refunds or discounts for missed sessions or no-shows.
- If Cheap Joe's or the instructor cancels the class, you will receive a full refund of tuition, but not for other related expenses.
- Please do not combine supply purchases and workshop purchases in the same order.
