This art workshop will be very different from a typical watercolor class. Using opaque paints (especially white) with transparent watercolor and various brushes, Edwina’s unique step-by-step methods will teach you how to paint life-like pet pawtraits of our furry children. The focus will be on painting dogs, but the techniques can be applied to cats and other animals as well. Topics include changing how you see, choosing good photo references, planning your painting, transferring images onto paper, backgrounds, painting various colors & textures of fur, capturing personality, and painting detailed facial features. Participants will practice painting several small elements and then apply the techniques learned to the main demonstration painting. Paint with Edwina and learn to paint the Australian Shepherd used to advertise this workshop, or work on an individual subject from your own, or one of Edwina’s reference photos that she will provide. Students should know the basics of painting with watercolors to benefit most from this workshop.
- Monday August 4, Tuesday August 5, Wednesday August 6, Thursday August 7, Friday August 8, 9:00am - 4:00pm EST
Pre-class instructions and/or specific details will be emailed 1 week prior to the workshop.
Level 2 (and up) - Beginner-Intermediate: Reviews basic techniques for beginners as needed, and offers practice exercises at an average pace to assist in gaining confidence and experience with the medium. Assistance is given to all.
Edwina is a self-taught artist of painting animals in watercolor and has well over 100 original paintings in private collections across the US, and in other countries as well. Edwina graduated magna cum laude with a BS in Art Education and K-12 Teaching certification from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. In 2000, she was chosen to be the Official Artist for the North Carolina Public Library System’s annual statewide Summer Reading Program for Children & Teens.
In addition to animal and landscape paintings, she has hand-painted signs, saw blades, Christmas ornaments, an occasional portrait, and the entire fleet of 30 carousel horses (on 4 different occasions), as well as a life-size detailed mural of a steam locomotive and a black light mural for an amusement park. In 2017, she illustrated a Children’s Book, written by a North Carolina author, about a little puppy finding its forever home.
Edwina has worked at Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff for 24 years. She was the In-Person Workshop Coordinator for 15 of those years, before developing, coordinating, and hosting the Virtual Workshop program beginning in 2020. Edwina has taught several online and in-person “Pawtrait” workshops, in addition to continuing to coordinate the online workshop program for Cheap Joe’s.
