Charcoal is an essential tool for fine artists. For many years now Coates willow charcoal has been recognized as the best quality charcoal in the world. The family-run business creates charcoal with a velvety smooth stroke and rich, deep black hue that is particularly favored by artists.

The willow plant used for making artist charcoal grows very quickly and takes only one growing season before it is ready for use. It takes 3 days to turn raw willow sticks into willow charcoal ready for the artist to use. The very best willow rods are selected from each crop to be used in the production of this charcoal. The willow is not compressed and is sorted and burned in its natural diameter and shape, slight variations are characteristic.

Willow Charcoal, Box of 6 Medium - The most popular size that we carry, this box of Coates Willow Charcoal includes 6 medium sticks, each measuring between 5-6 mm. in diameter.

Note - Please be aware that willow charcoal is a completely natural product made simply from the willow grown on the Coates family farm. Therefore the sizes of the charcoal sticks are approximate measurements, one end of the charcoal stick will differ in size to the other end. Look very carefully at a stick of willow charcoal and you will see the marks where the leaves have been removed from the willow stick and also the soft central pith at the core of the stick.

Company Info:

It was back in the 1960s that Percy Coate began experimenting with the willow he grew to make drawing charcoal. Although it took some years to perfect the technique, by the 1970s he was finally ready to share the new Coates willow charcoal with the world. Percy's grandfather, Robert Coate started in business in 1819 as a 'withy merchant', buying and selling local willow crops. Today Coates is still very much a family concern with members of the family involved in all aspects of the business.
