In 1906, Victor Claessens founded the company to produce top-quality artist canvas. The descendants of Victor Claessens have made a conscious choice to keep a small-scale approach to production and to honor the traditional methods for treating artist's canvas.
Claessens linen is principally produced from flax. This provides the best quality and is by far the most durable. The folks at Claessens process it all with the greatest care. All canvases receive the same meticulous treatment according to traditional methods. For each roll of oil primed canvas, zinc white is used as the primer, bound with linseed oil. After that the canvas is put into a drying room for three days where it oil dries naturally. After than, the canvas is sanded and a coating layer of titanium white is applied. Then canvas then has to go back into the drying room for a further ten days.
Claessens oil primed linen canvas is imported from Belgium.
Style No. 66 - At 13.4 oz. per square yard (primed), this medium texture, heavyweight linen will readily support larger works and heavier paint layers. This tighter woven linen canvas has a fairly smooth, medium texture and a tight weave for strength. Suitable for oil paint only.
