Chelsea Classical Studio Oil Painting Mediums

Chelsea Classical Studio Fine Art Materials are handcrafted from high quality natural and archival artists materials, created using historic methods and techniques. CCS oils are cold-pressed, non-toxic, and naturally purified without heat or chemicals, creating pure oils that are safer for artists than other oil painting mediums. Their mediums, solvents, and varnishes are all made without chemicals, turpentine, or petroleum mineral spirits, and therefore have no harsh carcinogenic fumes. They're also more environmentally friendly.

Fat Medium - When painting in oil, the tradition of 'fat over lean' should be observed. 'Fat,' or more oily paint, must always be applied over 'Lean,' or less oily paint. Fat Medium is a mixture of linseed oil, lavender spike oil essence, and damar resin. Fat Medium will make the paint richer, more glossy, and dry faster. It is recommended for later stages of painting.

Lean Medium - When painting in oil, the tradition of 'fat over lean' should be observed. 'Fat,' or more oily paint, must always be applied over 'Lean,' or less oily paint. Lean Medium consists of linseed oil and lavender spike oil essence – a historically documented, alternative solvent for painting that is safer to breathe than turpentine. Lean Medium will thin the paint and make it dry faster. It is recommended for early stages of painting.

Lavender Damar Varnish - This oil painting varnish is made with natural Damar resin dissolved in Lavender Spike Oil Essence. It can be used as a final gloss picture-varnish to preserve your painting, mixed into mediums to make them glossier and dry faster, and diluted with more solvent to make a retouch varnish. Because it's not made with turpentine, it doesn't cause the chronic health effects associated with the inhalation of fumes from turpentine or mineral spirits.

Lavender Retouch Varnish - This oil painting varnish is a ready-made retouch varnish that is a diluted, thinner version of the Lavender Damar Varnish. Use as a temporary protective layer on your painting while in process. Retouch varnish can be painted over. It's made with natural Damar resin dissolved in Lavender Spike Oil Essence. Because it's not made with turpentine, it doesn't cause the chronic health effects associated with the inhalation of fumes from turpentine or mineral spirits.

Linseed Oil - This linseed oil painting medium is extra pale, meaning it darkens less and yellows less over time. It's been washed and filtered to remove impurities, making it the cleanest pure linseed oil available. Adding this medium to your oil colors will speed up the drying time and increase the flow and transparency of the color. Available in a glass bottle.

Walnut Oil - This walnut oil painting medium will cause your oil colors to dry more slowly, and to yellow less than linseed oil over time. It's ideal for preserving the richness and brightness of whites and light colors. Available in a glass bottle.
