Daniel Smith Watercolor Grounds are an absorbent ground that can be applied to paper, board, or canvas to prepare it for use with watercolor, collage, pastels, pencils, mixed media, and more. It can also be a terrific way to set the mood and atmosphere of your artwork. This durable ground allows watercolor to be lifted and scrubbed away without damaging the painting surface.
Buff Titanium - Buff Titanium is a great tone for value studies and provides a gorgeous, classic-looking surface for work in neutral grays, earthy reds, black and white. Soft pastels, graphite, and watercolor pencils show up beautifully on Buff Titanium.
Iridescent Gold - Iridescent Gold creates a luminous, iridescent gold surface to paint on, and because it's semi-transparent it allows the color and/or pattern of the surface it's applied to show through slightly. For deepest gold, apply 2 to 3 thin coats. Your transparent and semi-transparent watercolors will add a glaze of color when painted over the Iridescent Gold Ground, modifying their color. You can paint over an entire surface with the ground or only in areas where you wish to add iridescent gold effects.
Mars Black - Mars Black makes interference, iridescent or Daniel Smith Luminescent Watercolors "pop" and also provides an exciting, unexpected background for all your standard watercolor paints. Soft pastels, graphite, and watercolor pencils show up beautifully on Mars Black.
Pearlescent White - Your transparent and semi-transparent watercolors will have a slight pearlescent glow when painted over a Pearlescent White ground. The ground makes a white pearlescent paintable area when applied to a white surface, and because it is semi-transparent it allows the color and/or pattern of the surface it is applied to show through slightly. Paint over an entire surface with the ground, or only in areas where you wish to add pearlescent effects.
Titanium White - Use Titanium White to rescue areas within a painting done on watercolor paper. Simply apply over an area within a painting that needs re-working and paint on top as usual.
Transparent - Transparent Watercolor Ground lets surface patterns shine through. Maintain the grain of wood panels or the colors and textures of decorative paper, fabrics or found objects as you enhance them with watercolor paint and mixed media materials. You get a protective coat for your substrate along with a pigment-gripping tooth.
