Follow along with Joe as he takes a painting all the way through from value study to completion, showing all the tips and techniques along the way, and even a little singing for added emphasis!
1: Watercolor Training - Value Study
In this episode, I'm going to show you how I begin the work ahead of time for painting by doing value studies.
3: Watercolor Training - Painting Trees
We're going to put in a clump of trees first - a huge mass of trees in the distant background. Then we will come in toward the foreground with some closer trees. In the background, we'll keep it cool with a mixture of blues.
5: Watercolor Training - Painting Smoke
I have a little painting that needs a little life put in it because it's a little country scene of a home and a barn, a couple of outbuildings, and the mountains where I live here. I'm not good at putting in people so how do I add life to it? One way is to have smoke coming out of the chimney.
7: Watercolor Training - Painting Wrap-Up
We did a lot of different things in it. We did the clouds, the background tree area, these evergreen trees, the negative tree trunk and the negative around the house, the smoke out of the chimney, and of course the little white lines.
2: Watercolor Training - Painting Clouds
I'd like to show you one or two approaches to clouds. People seem to want to do a lot of different skies and I do, too. They're so easy to do and we're gonna take a couple of minutes - that's about what it takes - because we want to get in there and get out.
4: Watercolor Training - Painting Shadows
We've brought the painting almost to its conclusion and in that, we've done clouds, we've done trees, we've done negative painting, positive and negative trees, and now we're going to take some Cobalt Blue and Red Rose Deep mixed to a nice purple, loaded on this nice 1.5" brush.
6: Watercolor Training - Little White Lines
We're going to put in the white lines now because I've brought the painting far enough along to have some dark areas and we can add some white lines to it.
