Customers are always interested in what “Cheap” Joe Miller is up to. What he is painting. Where they can view his art. Where they might buy his paintings. If he is teaching and where. What materials he is currently using. If he shows his work. What projects he is working on. The questions seem to go on and on.
At this time of the year, Joe stays busy with his family, grandchildren, painting, travel, and many other activities, as well as, with Cheap Joe’s. He is very active in the community and supports many organizations in the area.
One Night, Two Moons
The most exciting of news of this year is Joe’s new book. Joe has recently written and published a children’s book entitled One Night Two Moons. It is a delightful story about a magical Christmas eve when the trees of Mr. Brown’s farm come to life and dance around. The book sold out quickly but will be available in the 2014 Cheap Joe’s Catalog. (You can request the new catalog online!) Locally, you can find copies of Joe’s Book for sale at Blowing Rock Art and History Museum Gift Shop and any of the Boone Drug Pharmacylocations!
Joe’s incredible original paintings, which are featured in the book, are currently on display at The Jone’s House Community Center in downtown Boone. The Mazie Jones Art Gallery will house the collection throughout the holiday season. The Jone’s House is a historic residence in the heart of Boone, that was converted to a community center to better serve the people visiting Boone and the surrounding communities. They host many outdoor concerts, exhibits, and activities throughout the year. The holidays are especially wonderful due to the beautiful decorations of the house, inside and out.

The Dickson Gallery, Cannon Memorial Hospital, Linville, NC
Joe was also invited, recently, to exhibit a large collection of his paintings at the
Charles A. Cannon Jr. Memorial Hospital in Linville, NC. The Dickson Gallery will display his artwork for the local residences to enjoy through the end of the year.
I had the pleasure of joining him for the reception held in his honor, one recent, rather cold and wintery afternoon. The gathering was sponsored by Barbara Timberman and the Grandfather Golf and Country Club Art Group. The exhibit was wonderfully displayed and beautiful music was provided by three talented local musicians. The display is compiled of Joe’s traditional watercolors, more recent opaque works, and also large oils on canvas. I would encourage anyone in the area to take the time to view Joe’s paintings while they are on display at the hospital. He would be delighted to have everyone to enjoy them!
So, Joe, like most people during this season, is very busy. Although, he does take time to paint several times a week. Joe knows how important it is to stay inspired and creative. He says he doesn’t always go into his studio with the intent to paint something to completion. However, sometimes just to think, ponder, and contemplate and most times, just to play. Try a new color, a technique he saw recently, or read about other artists. Then, when the inspiration hits him, he is ready. Joe believes we should be like children and play, play, play. It is usually the best way to discover something new!
Now you know what is going on with Joe and I hope if you are in the High Country area this holiday season, you will find your way around to see his work. And especially to find time to visit all of us at Cheap Joe’s! We would love to show you around and sit and chat for a while!
